Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
On a black disc edged with an 1/8 inch (.32 cm) yellow border, the overall diameter 3 inches (7.62 cm), a sword and quill saltirewise surmounted by a Spanish helmet all yellow between two arced inscriptions, "AMERICAN" at the top and "MILITARY ACADEMY" in base, in white letters 5/16 inch (.79 cm) in height.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved on 3 August 1982.




Shoulder Loop Insignia


Description/Blazon
A gold color metal and enamel insignia 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a black enamel shield bearing a sword with blade up and quill in saltire surmounted by a Spanish helmet, all gold, the shield within an encircling segmented gold scroll inscribed around the top "AMERICAN MILITARY ACADEMY" and in base "FORWARD" in black enamel letters.

Symbolism
Black and gold are the colors of the Academy. The sword alludes to the military and to leadership. The pen is representative of academic endeavors. The helmet refers to Spanish soldiers in the proud heritage of Puerto Rico.

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was approved on 28 October 1980.
