Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
A white vertical ellipse edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) dark blue border within a white vertical elliptical designation band edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) dark blue border and inscribed in base "SPARTANBURG VIKINGS" in dark blue letters; surmounted by a gold stylized Viking head in white helm with gold horns, all outlined in dark blue.

Symbolism
Gold, dark blue, and white are the school colors. The Viking is the mascot.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved 29 August 1996.




Shoulder Loop Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Gold colored metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall, consisting of a shield blazoned:  "Azure, a stylized Viking's head in profile and facing to sinister Or".  Attached below the shield, a tripartite Blue scroll inscribed "WISDOM STRENGTH PEACE" in Gold letters.

Symbolism
 Navy blue and gold are the school colors.  Navy blue represents loyalty, a trait the cadets show in their faithfulness to the country as well as to each other.  Gold signifies wisdom, a virtue the cadets' show in their mature decisions and actions.  The Viking is the school's mascot and conveys fierceness, power, and protection.  The students identify with their mascot in their pursuit of academic as well as athletic endeavors.  The battalion motto is "Wisdom, Strength, and Peace".

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 28 June 2013.
