Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
On a blue embroidered device in the shape of the alphabet letter "A" (for Alaska), edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) yellow border, a stylized Polar Bear standing on an iceberg looking over his left shoulder with the front right paw raised.   Attached on either side of the bear, near the iceberg are three horizontal white bars.  Above the bear's head is the Big Dipper constellation in yellow.  The overall dimensions are 3 inches (7.62 cm) in height by 1 5/32 inches (2.94 cm) in width at the top and 3 inches (7.62 cm) in width at the bottom.

Symbolism
Blue, yellow, and white are the colors of the university.  The Nanook (an Eskimo word for Polar Bear) is the mascot of the university, and is symbolic of the Cadets' fierce winning spirit.  The stars represent the Big Dipper (the seven brightest stars of the constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear).  The large star pertains to Polaris, the brightest star in the constellation Ursa Minor and is more commonly known as the North(ern) Star or the Pole Star.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia originally authorized 19 February 1987 was cancelled.  A new shoulder sleeve insignia was authorized 25 April 2008.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-190)

Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Azure, the head, shoulders, and paws of a Polar Bear in trans-aspect growling, Argent, eyes and nose Sable, tongue Gules, in base waves of the sea Proper.  Attached below the shield, a Blue scroll inscribed "AD SUMMUM" ("TO THE SUMMIT") in Gold letters.

Symbolism
Blue, yellow, and white are the university colors.  The Polar Bear is the university mascot and symbolizes bravery, valor, vigilance, strength and fortitude.    The Latin motto "AD SUMMUM" translates in English to "To the Summit."

Background
The shoulder loop insignia originally authorized 19 February 1987 was cancelled.  A new shoulder loop insignia was authorized 25 April 2008.
