On a white shield 2 3/4 inches (6.99 cm) in width and 4 inches (10.16 cm) in length overall, a purple shield bearing three white vertical Tuscan columns, the center column surmounted by a purple and white "demon's head" facing to the right, between the words "NORTHWESTERN" at top and "STATE UNIVERSITY" at bottom in purple capital letters 1/4 inch (.64 cm) in height, all within a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) white border.
White and Purple are the University colors. The demon is the university mascot.
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for Northwestern State College of Louisiana on 23 April 1956. It was redesignated for the Northwestern State University of Louisiana on 2 April 1980. The insignia was amended to update the description and to add symbolism, metric measurements, and cable numbers on 20 April 2007. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-188)
