Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
A shield blazoned:  "Tierced in pairle wavy Purpure, Gules and Or, a cross pommeled within three crowns trefoil, two in fess and one in base, below a lamp flamant Argent," all within a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) Buff border.  Attached above the shield a White scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) Buff border and inscribed MINNESOTA STATE" in Purple letters.  The overall dimensions are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) by 2 3/4 inches (6.99 cm) in width.

Symbolism
The shield colors associate the three schools affiliated with the Minnesota State University ROTC program (Minnesota State University, Gustavus Adolphus College and Bethany Lutheran College).  The wavy partition line alludes to the schools location in Mankato, at the junction of the Minnesota and Blue Earth Rivers.  The lamp, cross and crowns are symbolic of the cadets of each of the schools and their joint dedication to support their schools, communities and country.

Shoulder Loop Insignia


Description/Blazon
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  "Tierced in pairle wavy and Argent, Purpure and Vert, a pair of tomahawks in saltire blades upward and outward, in chief a lamp flamant Or."  Attached below the shield, a Gold biparted scroll inscribed "MINNESOTA" "STATE" in Purple letters.

Symbolism
The wavy division of the shield alludes to the location of Mankato at the junction of the Minnesota and Blue Earth Rivers.  The purple segment represents the "blue earth," the green segment alludes to the agricultural aspects of the area, and the white segment represents limestone found in this area.  The two tomahawks symbolize the Native American heritage of the area and the two campuses of the University; they also refer to the military, while the lamp is indicative of knowledge and leadership. 

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 19 December 2003.
