Shoulder Loop Insignia


Description/Blazon
On a Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height consisting of a shield blazoned:  Quarterly Sable and Or in the first the dome of the university's administration building and in the fourth a demi-golden eagle erased, counterchanged.  Attached to base a Black scroll turned Gold and inscribed "SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI" in Gold letters.

Symbolism
Black and gold are the university's colors.  The dome of the administration building indicates pride in the university and its scholarship.  The golden eagle is the university's mascot and signifies spirit and achievement.

Background

The shoulder loop insignia was originally approved on 21 January 1958. It was amended on 24 May 1989 to revise the description and chip numbers, also amended on 20 September 1989 to reflect the colleges redesignation. The authorization was cancelled due to a new design on 13 June 2001, it is currently being amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 15 August 2017.

Blazon

On a shield shaped embroidered item edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) Black border blazoned as follows: Argent, issuant from dexter an eagle’s head Proper. Attached above the shield, a Yellow scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) Black border, inscribed “SOUTHERN MISS” Attached below the shield, a Yellow scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) Black border, inscribed “GOLDEN EAGLES” all in Black letters. The overall dimensions are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height by 2 1/2 inches (6.35cm) in width.


Symbolism

Black, brown, gold and white are the school colors. The screaming Golden Eagle is the school mascot, capturing the ‘esprit de corps’ of the cadets’ dedication and resolve. The eagle also alludes to the students’ effectiveness in the pursuit of knowledge, as well as the beginning their life’s journey.

The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved on 11 June 2021.
