Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
On a disc 2 7/8 inches (7.30 cm) in diameter overall consisting of a blue inner circle on which is a white demi-lion reguardant issuing from base detailed blue, within a white band charged with 16 blue stars all within a white border.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was authorized on 27 December 1968.  It was amended on 22 December 1995 to update the description, add cable numbers and provide a manufacturing drawing.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10J-453)




Shoulder Loop Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in width  overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Or, bordure Sable, a steamboat ensigned in dexter by an oak leaf palewise and in sinister a gear wheel, in base fesswise a cotton ball of the second.  Attached below the device, a Black scroll inscribed "MEMPHIS CITY SCHOOLS" in base metal letters. 

Symbolism
Black and gold are the County colors.  The steamboat symbolizes transportation, trade and commerce that have long been strong in Memphis and along the Mississippi River.  The cotton ball represents the strong ties to cotton trading and its production in the surrounding Mississippi River Delta.  The oak leaf historically denotes the vast timber land originally found in the region.  The gear wheel depicts progress.   

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 17 June 2008.
