Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
On a white arrowhead shaped device edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border, 3 5/16 inches (8.41 cm) in height by 2 13/16 inches (7.14 cm) in width overall a red building structure at the University of South Dakota with gray details and shaded black.  Attached below a white trapezoid scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border and inscribed "UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH DAKOTA" in black letters.

Symbolism
 Red and white are the colors of the University of South Dakota.  Red reflects the university's location on the Vermillion River.  The building structure represents the heritage of the university and the dedication of the cadets to their education, community and country.

Background
The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) was originally authorized 9 September 1958, and amended 25 February 1964, on 4 January 2000  a new description and symbolism of the new design was authorize.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-154)




Shoulder Loop Insignia


Description/Blazon
A red enamel shield on silver colored base metal with a silver pile on which is a red enameled war hatchet and peace pipe combined.

Symbolism
Red and white are the colors of the University of South Dakota.  Red also refers to the name of the city on the river of the same name, Vermillion.  The wavy lines on the shield are a reference to the course of the river. The peace pipe and war hatchet in combination represent the readiness of the ROTC for peace or war and indicate the Indian heritage of the area.

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 25 July 1963.
