Shoulder Sleeve Insignia
A disc 3 inches (7.62 cm) in diameter overall consisting of an inner yellow disc on which are two arched green olive branches surmounted by a red campanile in pale. Around the inner disc a red band edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) yellow border, inscribed "IOWA STATE" at top and "UNIVERSITY" in base in yellow letters, 5/16 inch (. 79 cm) in height with a yellow star on each side of the band separating the two inscriptions.
Red and yellow are the colors of the University. The wreath alludes to achievement. The campanile is a campus landmark and readily indentified with the University.
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 3 December 1969. It was amended to include a manufacturing drawing, update the description and add cable numbers on 3 February 2004. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-171)
Shoulder Loop Insignia
A gold metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height consisting of the shield of the coat of arms and a scroll bearing the designation of the University.
Red and yellow are the colors of the University. The chevron, representing a right angle alludes to technical measurements. The campanile is a campus landmark and readily indentified with the University. The Two roses are the State flower and represent the geographic location of the University.
The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 5 October 1971.
