Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
A circular blue insignia edged with an 1/8 inch (.32 cm) blue border, the overall diameter 3 inches (7.62 cm), consisting of a V Shaped gold wedge in the top of the disc bearing a blue demi-torch enflamed, below the V shape on each side a gold silhouetted evergreen tree, above the letters "EOU" in blue and below the trees an arched inscription "MOUNTAINEER" in gold letters, all letters 5/16 inch (.79 cm) in height.

Symbolism
Blue and gold are the colors of the University.  The V shape alludes to the valley in which La Grande is located.  The torch enflamed alludes to knowledge and to the zeal of the student body in its quest for enlightenment.  The evergreen trees, the state tree of Oregon, are indicative of that state. 
   
 

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 4 March 1983.  It was amended to change the name of the school and update the description and symbolism of the new design on 15 March 2010.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-196)

Description/Blazon
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a blue enamel shield with a gold inverted chevron shape in the top of the shield on which is a blue enamel demi-torch enflamed surmounted by a gold pine tree; on the blue enamel shield two gold swords with blades up in saltire.  Attached below the shield a gold arched scroll with undulating segments, the center segment inscribed "EOU" in blue letters.

Symbolism
Blue and gold are the colors of the university.  The inverted chevron shape (indicative of a valley) alludes to the location of La Grande, Oregon.  The torch enflamed refers to knowledge and the zeal of the student body in its quest for enlightenment.  The evergreen is the state tree.  The crossed swords represent military training and leadership.
