Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
A shield-shaped embroidered item edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm)  black border blazoned as follows:  Per pale Gules and Argent, two rifles in saltire, surmounted by a shield charged with a bar checky between two pellets in chief and one in base its crest a castle all Sable.  Attached above the shield, a gold scroll edged with a 1/8 inch black border (.32 cm) inscribed "THREE RIVERS BATTALION" in black letters. The overall dimensions are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height and 3 inches (7.62 cm) in width.

Symbolism
Blue and gold are the colors of the university.  The divided background of red signifying patriotism, and blue symbolizing piety.  The gold scrolls with black letters and borders are traditional Army colors.  The crossed rifles surmounted by a shield crested by a castle symbolize the Arsenal of Democracy significant to the Pittsburgh's history; the checker pattern represents the strength and spirit of military training, three black pellets allude to the three rivers of Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio that come together in Pittsburgh.

Background
The shoulder Sleeve insignia was originally authorized 13 March 1972.  It was amended to change the school design and update the description and symbolism of the new design on 12 April 2011. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-200)

Description/Blazon
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall  consisting of a shield blazoned: Or, an escutcheon Argent "Silver Gray" charged checky with three plates, two in chief and one in base, all conjoined to a three tower embattled castle in chief surmounting two rifles in saltire offensive ends up. Attached above the shield, a white scroll inscribed "THREE RIVERS". Attached below the shield a scroll parted to the left and inscribed "ARMAMENTARIAM" and to the right a blue scroll inscribed "DEMOCRATIA".  Which translate to:  Arsenal of Democracy
