Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
A gold rectangular device edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border, 3 1/4 inches (8.26 cm) in height and 2 1/4 inches (5.72 cm) in width, on which are two black rifles forming a "V" below a black and gold hornet in profile, all within the inscription "EAST CENTRAL" above "HORNETS" below in black letters 5/16 inch (.79 cm) in height.

Symbolism
Black and gold are the school colors.  The hornet, the school's mascot, is a representative of the fighting spirit of the school.  The rifles refer to the military aspect of the training the cadets receive.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved by 5th Endorsement to correspondence referenced DAAG-HDP-A (25 May 77), the Institute of Heraldry, 24 May 1978, it was amended on 25 November 1991 to add subdued colors and metric measurements and add a symbolism. Shoulder Loop Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Gold metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) high consisting of a shield blazoned: Quarterly Or, and Sable, in the first quarter a hornet to sinister, in the second quarter a lamp of knowledge to dexter, in the third quarter a laurel wreath surmounted by a torch, in the fourth quarter an open book in bend sinister all Or, garnished Sable.  Attached above the shield, a Black scroll inscribed "EAST CENTRAL H.S. in Gold letters.  Attached below the shield, a Black rolled and turned scroll inscribed "EXCELLENCE HONOR SPIRIT" in Gold letters.

Symbolism
Black and gold are the school colors, Black signifies dignity and determination, gold represents the four virtues of nobleness, goodwill, vigor and magnanimity.  The hornet is the school's mascot which reflects an industrious and protective attribute promoting the idea of pride in, and service to the school and community.  The lamp of knowledge represents light, life, and spiritually, the laurel wreath and torch signifies truth, intelligence and triumph. The open book represents knowledge.
