Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
A white circular device with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm)  blue border, the overall diameter 3 inches (7.62 cm) on which is a blue silhouette of a devil between two arced inscriptions "DUKE" above and "UNIVERSITY" below in blue letters 5/16 inch (.79 cm) in height.

Symbolism
Blue and white are the colors of the University.  The blue silhouette of devil represents the school's mascot.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 24 June 1983.  It was amended to include a manufacturing drawing, update description and add cable numbers on 09 January 1998.   (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-144)

Description/Blazon
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a blue shield on which is a gold representation of the Duke Chapel, detailed of black enamel below, a white enamel chief embattled; the shield within a three-segmented gold scroll inscribed "QUOD" on the dexter segment, "POTES" on the center segment and "ESTO" on the sinister segment in blue letters.

Symbolism
Dark blue and white are the colors of the University.  Duke Chapel is the most prominent building on the campus.  The University motto is the Latin for "Be All You Can Be."

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 10 January 1983.
