Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  "Vert, in chief a rising sun, and in base an unfurled scroll and lamp of knowledge all Or." Attached above the shield a Black scroll inscribed "LANGSTON HUGHES" in Gold letters.  Attached below the shield, a Black tri-parted scroll inscribed "UNITED IN THE", "PURSUIT OF" and "EXCELLENCE" in Gold letters. 

Symbolism
Green, gold and black are the school colors.  The green signifies adaptability, a virtue the cadets possess in everything they do.  Gold suggests honor, an admirable trait the cadets have for their country as well as each other.  Black represents determination, an attribute the cadets reflect in their academic as well as athletic achievements. The rising sun symbolizes a new beginning.  The scroll represents the book and poem written by Langston Hughes titled, The Dream Keeper.  The lamp suggests knowledge and education.  

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was approved on 4 November 2011.
