A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height consisting of a maroon cross between four white heraldic roses barbed and seeded gold, the center of the cross surmounted by a white disc bearing a green wavy diagonal band, all above a green scroll inscribed "IN REASON WISDOM" in gold letters.
The colors maroon and white are used for units of the Army Medical Department. Green, the color of the ancient academic gown of medicine, has long been associated with the Medical profession. The cross is a symbol of mercy, service and care; it stands for the Hospital. The wavy diagonal band, taken from the former coat of arms of the Rhineland commemorates the unit's participation in the Rhineland campaign during World War II. The rose is the state flower of New York, named for the Duke of York whose badge was a white rose. In addition, the rose is a symbol of wisdom. They are four in number because four symbolizes equilibrium, logic and reason. The use of the rose refers both to the Hospital's location in the State of New York and to its motto.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 18 March 1970.
