Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
A shield-shaped embroidered item with a rounded base edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) White border blazoned as follows:  "Per bend sinister Azure and Argent, a stylized landscape of pine trees throughout counterchanged, in chief a polestar Argent (Silver Gray), and in base an axe bend sinister, blade of the last, highlighted of the second, handle of the first.  Attached above the shield, a Blue scroll inscribed "LUMBERJACKS" in White letters.  The overall dimensions are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height and 2 11/16 inches (6.83 cm) in width.

Symbolism
Blue and white are the school colors.  Blue represents loyalty, a virtue the cadets possess to their country and for each other.  White conveys maturity an attribute the cadets reflect in their respectful manners and decisions.  The polestar signifies the North Star; a symbol that Minnesota is the North Star State.  The landscape of pine trees and the counterchange of white on them alludes to the snow covered Norway pine trees which is the State tree of Minnesota and the snow reflects the northern climate of Bemidji. The axe commemorates the logging heritage of the Bemidji area.  "Lumberjacks" is the school nickname and the name of the battalion.

A silver colored metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height overall, consisting of a shield blazoned:  "Per bend Argent (Silver Gray) and Azure, two bendlets of the second and Argent, in chief an open book surmounted by a quill pen per bend and a lamp of knowledge, and in base a polestar all of the first."  Attached below the shield, a Blue scroll inscribed "ACTA NON VERBA" in Silver letters. 

Symbolism
Blue and white are the school colors.  Blue represents loyalty, a virtue the cadets possess to their country and for each other.  White conveys maturity an attribute the cadets reflect in their respectful manners and decisions.  The lamp of knowledge, book and quill pen all stand for the cadets' academic endeavors.  The polestar signifies the North Star; a symbol that Minnesota is the North Star State.  The motto "ACTA NON VERBA" translates to English "DEEDS NOT WORDS".
