Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
A circular item 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in diameter overall consisting of an inner silver gray disc displaying a garnet reversed chevron surmounted by the head of a Viking facing forward, tan face; hair, helmet, brow, mustache all silver gray, white horns on helmet, encircled by a garnet designation band edged with a 1/8 (.32 cm) silver gray border inscribed "WILLIAM M RAINES HS" at top and "VIKINGS" at bottom all in silver gray letters. 

Symbolism
Garnet and gray are the school colors.  The school's mascot is the Viking. Garnet (red) symbolizes boldness, a virtue the cadets possess to accomplish their personal as well as academic accomplishments.  Gray (silver gray) represents maturity and wisdom a characteristic the cadets signify in their respectful manners and decisions.  White signifies perfection. The reversed chevron implies a "V" which represents the Viking.  The Viking head is symbolic of strength and courage.  The color of the Viking face pays homage to the long journey the cadets took as African Americans.

Description/Blazon
 A silver colored metal and enamel device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height overall, consisting of a garnet diamond shape displaying a gold Viking ship within a narrow silver gray diamond border.  Attached above the diamond, a black scroll inscribed" "VIKING BN" in silver letters.  Attached below the diamond, a black scroll inscribed "ICHIBAN" in silver letters.

Raines High School 1979 yearbook.  The motto "ICHIBAN" translates to English "FIRST".  William M. Raines High school was the "First" African American High School to open in the state of Florida.
