On a scarlet disc, edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border, the frontal image of a jaguar in natural colors (yellow and black) stalking from the top of the circle, its left paw extending over the bottom border, all fimbriated black. Attached above the disc, a white designation band also edged black and inscribed "UNIV. SOUTH AL." in blue letters. The overall dimensions are 3 inches (7.62 cm) in height and 2 3/16 inches (5.56 cm) in width.
Red, white and blue are host school colors. These are also our nation's colors: white represents purity, red stand for courage and blue shows valor. The shield shape of the insignia guards the cooperation between the host school and the partner institutions. The Jaguar is the unit's mascot.
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 6 October 1993. It was cancelled on 26 February 2002, due to a new design, description and symbolism. On 19 April 2002 it was amended to change the inscription of the designation band. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-116).
