A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 inch (2.54 cm) in height consisting of a shield blazoned: Gules an ear of corn Or, on a chief Argent, an open book of the second and attached to either side and passing across the base of the shield a Gold tripartite scroll inscribed "PATRIOTISM CITIZENSHIP COURAGE" in Red letters.
Red and white are the University colors. The open book is symbolic of learning and the partially shucked ear of corn is indicative of the state's nickname, the "Cornhusker State".
The shoulder loop insignia was originally authorized 29 September 1950; it was cancelled on 24 January 1951. The current design was authorized on 27 August 1986.
