Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
 On a scarlet oval edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border 3 inches ( 7.62 cm) in width and 3 1/2  inches (8.89 cm) in height, charged with an Academic Letter "N" of the same, fimbriated cream.

Symbolism
Scarlet and cream are the university colors.  The Academic Letter "N" is the University icon and is a symbol of initiative and achievement.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 29 September 1950; it was cancelled and rescinded on 8 November 1957. A new shoulder sleeve insignia design was authorized on 9 November 2004, to include an updated description and symbolism. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-177)




Shoulder Loop Insignia


Description/Blazon
 A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 inch (2.54 cm) in height consisting of a shield blazoned:  Gules an ear of corn Or, on  a chief Argent, an open book of the second and attached to either side and passing across the base of the shield a Gold tripartite scroll inscribed "PATRIOTISM CITIZENSHIP COURAGE" in Red letters.   

Symbolism
Red and white are the University colors.  The open book is symbolic of learning and the partially shucked ear of corn is indicative of the state's nickname, the "Cornhusker State".

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was originally authorized 29 September 1950; it was cancelled on 24 January 1951. The current design was authorized on 27 August 1986.
