Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
On a shield shaped embroidered item 3 1/4 (8.26 cm) in height and width. Blazoned as follows: Argent, a hawk rising Proper; all within a diminished bordure Vert. Attached below and to the side of the shield a Green scroll inscribed UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA.

Symbolism
Black, green, white and pink are the school colors. The hawk is the new mascot of the school; its taking flight is emblematic of a new beginning by lifting off into the sky.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 16 March 1950.  It was amended due to a new design on 1 June 1959, currently cancelled for an updated description and symbolism for a new design on 26 February 2016. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-186)

Description
On a Silver shield shaped metal and epoxied device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height blazoned as follows: Per chevron Argent (Silver) and Vert, in chief a sun in glory between dexter a tree and to sinister a sheaf of arrows, points upward, all of the second, and in base a hawks claw throughout of the first, garnished of the second. Attached to the sides and below the shield a Green scroll inscribed LUX ET LEX in Silver letters.

Symbolism
Black, green, white and pink are the school colors. The hawks claw alludes to the schools new mascot. The sun illuminates, provides life, and is emblematic of glory and honor. The tree denotes growth and taking root in ones life and education. The bundle of arrows characterizes the military side of the ROTC program.
