Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
A circular insignia 3 inches (7.62 cm) in diameter overall consisting of an inner blue disc on which is a white sword with blade up surmounted by a white lamp of knowledge enflamed yellow above two arched yellow stylized laurel branches; around the disc a white band edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) blue border, inscribed "UNIVERSITY OF" at top and "NEW HAMPSHIRE" in base  in blue letters 5/16 inch (.79 cm) in height.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was authorized 30 April 1975.




Shoulder Loop Insignia


Description/Blazon
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a blue shield on which is a gold lamp of knowledge enflamed.  Attached above the shield, a wreath alternating gold and blue supporting a horizontal band of seven gold chain links supporting a gold arm and hand grasping a gold sledge hammer.  Attached below the shield, a three segmented gold scroll inscribed "SCIENCE" on the dexter segment, "ARTS" on the center segment and "INDUSTRY" on the sinister segment all letters blue.

Symbolism
 The shield, crest and motto are taken from the seal of the University.  The shield is blue, the University color. The lamp is the lamp of knowledge.  The arm holding the sledge hammer issuing from the link chain represents industry.  The motto is that of the University

Background
 The shoulder loop insignia was originally authorized 21 August 1939.  It was amended to reflect the change of the motto and revising the description to more accurately describe the insignia on 13 June 1980.
