On a purple disc, a white Knight in armor astride a white horse all detailed purple encircled by a white designation band edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) purple border and inscribed "FURMAN" arcing at top and "UNIVERSITY" arcing in base in purple letters 5/16 inch (.79 cm) in height. The overall diameter is 3 3/16 inches (8.10 cm).
Purple and white are the colors of the University. The paladin (Knight) is the school mascot and carries a shield charged with a fleur-de-lis, the symbol of France. The paladin, one of the twelve peers of Charlemagne's court, also suggests the ROTC values of military training academics and loyalty.
The shoulder sleeve insignia was authorized 26 December 1989. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-54)
