Shoulder Loop Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Gold colored metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Per bend Azure and Vert, a nautilus shell Argent.  Attached below the shield a Gold metal scroll inscribed "WEST FLORIDA" in Black letters.   

Symbolism
Blue and green are the colors of the university.  The nautilus shell alludes to both the school's location near the sea its nickname, "Argonauts".  The Argonauts were mythological seamen and the literal Greek translation of "nautilus" is "sailor".

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was approved on 20 December 1989.
