On a black disc with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border, 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in diameter overall, a caricature "Jay hawk" in blue, red, yellow and white.
The school colors are red and blue. The jayhawk, a fictitious bird of Kansas, alludes to the nickname of the University's athletic teams and is the traditional school's mascot.
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 9 June 1948. It was amended to add a color and update the description and symbolism of the new design on 5 January 1989.
