Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
On a light blue horizontal rectangle arched convexly at top and edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) ultramarine blue border, a white ram's head with white horns, outlined and detailed black, between the inscription "UNIVERSITY OF" arcing above and "NORTH CAROLINA" below all on white letters.  The overall dimensions are 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in height by 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in width.

Symbolism
 Light blue, dark blue and white are the colors of the university.  The ram is the school mascot.

Shoulder Loop Insignia


Description/Blazon
A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in width overall consisting of a silver horizontal oval scroll inscribed "UNIVERSITY OF" at top and "NORTH CAROLINA" in base in light blue letters surmounted by a silver vertical sole of a foot marked on the heel with black spot.   Overall a horizontal black scroll inscribed "TAR HEELS" in silver letters.  

Symbolism
Light blue and white (silver) are the school colors.  The school's nickname is represented by the sole of a foot bearing a black spot on its heel.

The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 8 May 1996.
