Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
On a six-sided shield diagonally quartered blue and white and edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) yellow border, a yellow Viking head with helmet affront.  Attached above the shield a blue scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) yellow border and inscribed "HILO HIGH" in white letters.  The overall dimensions are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height by 3 1/4 inches (8. 26 cm) in width.

Symbolism
 Blue and gold (yellow) are the school colors.   The Viking is the school's mascot and reflects the leadership qualities of the cadets.

 The shoulder sleeve insignia was authorized 9 March 1994.




Shoulder Loop Insignia


Description/Blazon
A silver color metal and enamel device,  1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) overall consisting of three black mountains, the center snow-capped and issuing a cloud of white smoke between two white sugar cane stalks, all resting on a wavy blue base:  over all at center a silver arcing scroll inscribed "VIKING PRIDE."

Symbolism
The wavy base represents Hilo Bay, the location of the city of Hilo and the school.  It also reflects the school's Viking mascot and alludes to the seafaring people of the locale.  The center mountain denotes a volcano, a prominent feature on the island of Hawaii.  The sugar cane stands for the local economy and alludes to the civic pride of the cadets.
