A disc edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) green border, the overall diameter 3 inches (7.62 cm), consisting of an inner disc horizontally divided in half, green above yellow on which is centered a white sword with blade up (hilt, guard, and pommel black). Around the disc, a green band inscribed "THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA AT BIRMINGHAM" in yellow letters 5/16 inch (.79 cm) in height.
Green and yellow are the University's colors. The sword is indicative of the valor, unity, and strength displayed by the University's cadets. The sword also refers to the military and leadership.
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 25 July 1984. It was amended 2 November 1992 to add metric measurements. The insignia was amended to reflect the official name of the school and update the description and symbolism of the design on 10 December 1992. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-99)
