A yellow oval embroidered item 3 inches (7.62 cm) in height and 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in width overall consisting of a inner yellow oval disc edged with a 1/16 inches (.16 cm) blue border, displaying a yellow stylized bobcat's head erased at neck outlined blue, eye and mouth detailed blue, encircled by a yellow designation band edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) blue border, inscribed "MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY" at the top and "BOBCATS" at bottom all in blue letters.
Blue and gold are the colors of the University. Blue represents loyalty, an attribute the cadets have for their country and for each other along with their determination to succeed. Gold is symbolic of virtue, which every member of the battalion must strive for. The bobcat is the school's mascot which reflects the strength and spirit of the cadets' military training.
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 1 June 1951. It was amended to revised the description on 28 June 1989, the SSI was cancelled a new current design was authorized on 22 March 2013.
