Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
On a shield-shaped embroidered item edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) Red border, blazoned as follows:  Per pale Gules and Argent charged with a mullet counterchanged.  Attached above the shield a White arched scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) Red border inscribed "HOUSTON BN" in Red letters. The overall dimensions are 3 inches (7.62 cm) in height and 2 3/4 inches (6.99 cm) in width. 

Symbolism
Red and White are the University colors. Red signifies valiance and patriotism. White represents the five virtues of humility, beauty, purity, clarity and innocence. Yellow stands for goodwill, honor and wisdom. The lone star is taken from the Texas state flag.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized for University of Houston by 3d Endorsement DAAG-HAD, The Institute of Heraldry, dated 31 August 1976. SSI was cancelled due to a new design by letter dated 12 March 2003, is currently amended this date (22 May 2013)  to authorize the wear of the new design by the SROTC cadets assigned to University of Houston. Shoulder Loop Insignia


Description/Blazon
A silver color metal and enamel irregular elliptical device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall divided vertically into two equal halves, white enamel to dexter and red enamel to sinister, overall a chevron checky alternating red enamel and silver supporting a five-pointed white enamel star, the top point of the star coinciding with the arcs along the sides of the device, the area between the horizontal points of the star and the top of the device of blue enamel.  Attached below the red enamel scroll inscribed "IN TIME" in silver letters.

Symbolism
Red and white are the colors of the University.  Blue, white and red are the National colors and the colors of the flag of the State of Texas.  The checky chevron is taken from the shield of the coat of arms of the University.  The star is representative of Texas as the "Lone Star State". The arcs from the chevron to the top point of the star are indicative of the pinnacle of accomplishment in academic, physical, military and moral endeavors of the SROTC cadets in the program.  Encompassing the star, the arcs also allude to the University as a credit to the State of Texas.

The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 31 August 1976.
