Shoulder Sleeve Insignia
On a disc 3 inches (7.62 cm) in diameter overall, an inner disc divided per fess dancette of three yellow at the top and black in base on the yellow two black bayonets in saltire, on the black a yellow lamp enflamed. Around the inner disc a black band edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) yellow border, the band inscribed APPALACHIAN STATE at the top and UNIVERSITY in base in yellow letters 5/16 (.79 cm) in height.
Black and yellow are the colors of the University. The three mountain peaks allude to the geographic location of the University in the Blue Ridge Mountain area of North Carolina. The cross bayonets represent military training; the lamp enflamed is indicative of knowledge and wisdom.

Shoulder Loop Insignia
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) width consisting of three black enamel mountain peaks below a red enamel flame, the flame between two black enamel bayonets forming an inverted chevron, the device within a gold color metal arced scroll in base, inscribed APPALACHIAN STATE in black enamel letters.
Black and yellow (gold) are the colors of the University. The three mountain peaks allude to the geographic location of the University in the Blue Ridge Mountain area of North Carolina. The bayonets represent military training. The spade shape of the bayonet refers to the mining industry of the area. The flame is indicative of knowledge and wisdom.
The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 25 November 1969.
