Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
A gold rectangular device with a gold arced scroll attached above and below, all edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) maroon border, the overall dimensions are 3 5/8 inches (9.21 cm) in height and 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in width; on the rectangle a bulldogs head in spiked collar all gold detailed and outlined maroon.  On the top scroll the inscription HINDS and on the bottom scroll AHS, all in maroon letters 5/16 inch (.79 cm) in height.

Background
 The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 29 November 1979.

Description
A gold color metal and enamel insignia 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a maroon enamel shield on which is a gold open book with maroon edges of pages, the book charged on the dexter page with a maroon silhouetted short sword with blade up and on the sinister page with a stylized magnolia blossom with closed white petals and three green leaves, below the book in base a gold and maroon horizontal mound surmounted by a gold plow.  Attached below the shield a gold scroll inscribed THE BULLDOGS in maroon letters.         

Symbolism
Maroon and gold are the colors of the school.  The open book alludes to knowledge and represents the aspirations of the cadets in their quest and acquisition of knowledge in all fields of endeavor.  The short sword is indicative of military science and leadership.  The magnolia blossom, state flower of Mississippi, refers to the state in which the school is located.  The plow alludes to agriculture, the basis on which the school was founded.
