A gold color metal enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall, consisting of an arched shield blazoned: Per pale Argent and Sanguine, a sword point up palewise Or, between an antique lamp inflamed in dexter chief and a fleur-de-lis in sinister chief of the like. Attached above the shield, a maroon mural crown with white crenellations, and attached below the shield, a maroon scroll inscribed SEMPER PRIMA in gold letters.
Maroon and white are the colors of Hillside High School. The sword represents the leadership role the cadets play. The antique lamp stands for knowledge that the cadets receive through training and in school. The fleur-de-lis is emblematic of First Years Honor with Distinction. The Latin motto SEMPER PRIMA translates as Always First.
he shoulder loop insignia was authorized 13 September 1988. It was amended to correct the description of the design on 7 October 1988.
