On a gold color metal and enamel insignia 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height overall, consisting of a gold color metal open book in perspective with white enamel pages surmounted by a sabre with blade up and a quill forming a saltire and extending above and below the book, all of gold color metal, between a gold color metal floral pattern on each white enamel page, overall in the vertical center a gold color metal stylized Florence flask with green enamel base, all supported by a gold color metal anvil. Attached above the device a gold color metal scroll inscribed NSDU in green enamel letters.
Green and gold (yellow) are the colors of the University. The open book alludes to knowledge; together with the quill it represents academic development; with the sword, it refers to military training. The sword, with blade up, is indicative of leadership. The anvil and Florence flask indicate industry and science. The floral pattern is symbolic to wheat, representing Agriculture, the primary industry of North Dakota.
The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 1March 1974.
