Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
A shield-shaped device with an arced scroll attached above the shield, the overall dimensions are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height and 2 1/4 inches (5.72 cm) in width; on a purple shield edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) gold border a Viking War club surmounted by a Viking helmet, all in gold; on a purple arced scroll edged with a 1/8 inches (.32 cm) gold border, the inscription VIKING in gold letters 5/16 inch (.79 cm) in height.

Background
he shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 21 July 1947.  It was amended to change the design and update the description on 13 December 1972, currently amended to add subdued colors, metric measurements and provide a manufacturing drawing on 19 February 2014.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10J-1084)

Description
A silver color metal and enamel insignia 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield divided into a light blue sky and dark blue mountains in base, issuing from base diagonally on the viewers left a silver hand grasping a red enamel torch enflamed.  Attached below the shield a blue enamel scroll inscribed AD DISCENDUM DUCERE in silver letters.  (SLI is for Denver High Schools, now Denver School District.)  

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was approved on 8 July 1975.
