Shoulder Sleeve Insignia
On a white disc edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) red border, the overall diameter 3 inches (7.62 cm) a red silhouetted demi-torch enflamed surmounted by a white vertical short sword with blade upward; overall the letters EWU in white 3/4 inch (1.91 cm) in height.
Red and white are the colors of the University. The torch enflamed alludes to knowledge; it further represents the zeal of the student body in its quest for knowledge. The sword is indicative of the military and leadership.
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 27 July 1973. It was amended to change the name of the school from Eastern Washington College to Eastern Washington University and update the description and symbolism of the new design on 28 June 1978. A new design was authorize for wear 10 February 1983, currently amended to include an updated manufacturing drawing. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-221)
Shoulder Loop Insignia
A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of silver shield on which issues from base a red enamel demi-torch enflamed surmounted by a silver sword in the vertical center with blade upward. Attached below the shield an undulating red enamel scroll inscribed on the center segment EWU in silver letters.
