A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall, consisting of a shield blazoned: Sanguine a cross throughout Or, in chief a demi-torch enflamed and an oak leaf of the like, overall a sword palewise of the first. Attached above the shield, a gold scroll inscribed ELON'' and attached below the shield a gold scroll inscribed LUMEN NUMEN all in maroon letters.
The college colors are maroon and gold. The cross and sword are indicative of the colleges motto, FIGHTIN CHRISTIANS. The torch enflamed represents not only the knowledge to be gained at the college, but also the transmittal of such knowledge by the teachers. The three flames of the torch are representative of the three geographic divisions of the college in North Carolina, namely Burlington, Greensboro and the center and dominant one, Piedmont, where the college is located. The oak leaf is synonymous with the college name Elon which means oak in Hebrew.
The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 23 January 1985.
