Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
On a purple vertical ellipse edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border, a black and white roof and cupola clock tower issuant form base below the inscription JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY arcing above in white letters and surmounted by the inscription DUKE BATTALION arcing in base in purple letters.  Overall dimension are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height by 2 5/8 inches (6.67 cm) in width.

Symbolism
Purple is the official color of the university. The cupola clock tower on WILSON HALL is reflective of the cadets pride and tradition.

Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 16 January 1978. It was cancelled and a new design authorized on 17 April 1997, it is currently being amended to add the ACU color conversions on 14 November 2017.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-142)

Description
A shield shaped silver color metal and enamel device, 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm)in height, blazoned as follows; Argent (Silver), within an orle Sable, a cross fillet between in first (1st) and fourth (4th) quarter, two battle-axes in saltire all of the second, in second (2nd) and third (3rd) quarters, a chevron of the last charged with a mullet Or.  Attached below the shield, a Silver Gray scroll inscribed KNOWLEDGE IS LIBERTY in Silver Gray letters.

Symbolism
he shield, based upon the baronial thirteenth (13th) century coat of arms of the Madison family, signifies the universitys historical periods. The motto KNOWLEDGE IS LIBERTY is adapted from the quotation by James Madison, The diffusion of knowledge is the only guardian of true liberty.  

Background

The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 16 January 1978, it is currently being amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 14 November 2017.
