A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a blue enamel shield on which is an orange enamel torch enflamed, emitting an arc of six silver rays to the top of the shield, overall a silver and brown enamel eagle poised with wings elevated, grasping a silver sheathed sword with blade to base. Attached below the shield, an arced silver scroll inscribed GEORGIA SOUTHERN in black enamels letters.
Royal blue, white (silver) and orange are the colors of the university. The torch enflamed is indicative of learning. The six rays represent the six schools comprising the university and further commemorate the role of the university in lighting the way to the future through education. The sheathed sword alludes to the military and the eagle is the universitys mascot.
The shoulder loop insignia was originally authorized 5 January 1983. It was amended to include updated manufactured drawings and to retroactively change the name of the school and update the description and symbolism of the design on 21 May 2014.
