Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
A shield shaped embroidered item, arced outwardly at top, blazoned as follows; Azure, a sword palewise, blade upward Or, surmounted on the blade with a bison head couped at the neck, Argent, garnished Argent (Silver gray); attached above and between a 1/16 inch (.16 cm) narrow white border, an arced blue scroll inscribed "HOWARD", in white; all within a narrow 1/8 inch (.32cm) white border.  Overall dimensions are 31/2 inches (8.89cm) in height and 2 1/2 inches (6.35cm) in width.

Symbolism
Royal blue (Ultramarine Blue) and white are the colors of the University. The sword alludes to the military readiness and leadership. The bison is indicative of the nickname of the athletic teams and the schools mascot.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 13 November 1980.  It was amended to incorporate additional detail color in the design on 20 October 1986, currently amended to update the manufactured drawing on 30 May 2014.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-19)

Description
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Per pale Azure and Gules, a bison statant Argent.  Attached below the shield, a Silver scroll inscribed HOWARD UNIVERSITY in Blue letters.         

Symbolism
The bison is the schools mascot.  Red, white and blue are the school colors.

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 20 April 1989.
