Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
A gray shield-shaped  device with a gray horizontal scroll attached above the shied, all edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) crimson border, the overall dimensions 3 1/2  inches (8.89 cm) in height and 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in width; on the shield a crimson open book in perspective superimposed over a crimson vertical sword with blade up, the book surmounted by a gray pedestal; on the gray scroll the letters M I T in crimson letters 5/16 inch (.79 cm) in height.

Symbolism
Crimson and gray are the colors of the Institute.  The pedestal is taken from the seal of the University.  The open book alludes to knowledge, both academic and technical.  The sword is indicative of the military and leadership.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 3 January 1931.   A new design was authorized on 4 December 1980.

Description
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 3/32 inches (2.78 cm) in height overall, the shield vertically divided with maroon enamel to the viewers left and gray enamel to the viewers right, centered overall the seal of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in gold relief.        

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was originally authorized 3 January 1931.  It was amended to update the description on 29 August 1990.
