Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
A yellow circular shaped embroidered item, consisting of two black vertical stripes superimposed by a diagonally place black stripe, from upper left to lower right, where the stripes cross each other, the portion is yellow,  surmounted by a torch, white holder/base, enflamed red, displayed on torch base a yellow sphere, outlined and gridlines red, with a arched diagonally place blue stripe edged black, from upper left of the sphere to lower right; the torch flames partially surmounting a circular white designation band, inscribed JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY in red, all within a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) yellow border.

Symbolism
The disc pattern is taken from the city of Baltimore flag, the location of the university. The torch symbolizes knowledge; the gridline sphere signifies Johns Hopkins Universitys global reputation as one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

Background
 The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 29 May 1969.  It was amended to include a subdued insignia on 13 October 1988, currently amended to update the manufacturing drawing on 24 July 2014. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-229)

Description
A gold colored metal and enamel shield shaped device, 1 1/8 (2.86 cm) wide overall blazoned as follows: Quarterly, in first (1st) and fourth (4th) quarters, a paly of six (6) Or and Sable, a bend of the last counterchanged; in second (2nd) and third (3rd) quarters, quarterly Argent and Gules, a cross bottony throughout, counterchanged; on a chief Azure, a sphere, between two open books, all Argent and garnished Or. Attached to the shield, three black arched scrolls, at top, to the left and right of the shield, inscribed at top THE JOHNS to the left HOPKINS and to the right UNIVERSITY, in gold. 

Symbolism
The lower portion of the shield is adapted from State of Maryland coat of arms, the home state with the university. The open books and gridline sphere denotes Johns Hopkins Universitys global reputation as one of the most prestigious universities of higher education in the world. 

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 1 August 1955.
