Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
A rectangular device 4 inches (10.16 cm) in height and 3 inches (7.62 cm) in width overall, arched at top and bottom, consisting of a blue background edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) yellow border on which is a red fort fimbriated white surmounted by a yellow Lamp of Knowledge enflamed all between the inscription MOBILE COUNTY above and PUBLIC SCHOOLS in base in white letters 3/8 inch (.95 cm) in height.  Attached above the rectangle an arced yellow scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) yellow border inscribed MURPHY in blue letters. 

Symbolism
Blue, white and red are the National colors.  The fort, representative of Fort Gaines established for the protection of the natural harbor at Mobile Bay, alludes to the geographic location of the school system.  It is also indicative of military training.  The lamp enflamed commemorates academic and military standards of achievement.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia and tabs were authorized on 29 June 1970 currently amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 15 July 2014.

Description

A Gold color metal and epoxied shield shaped device, 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height, blazoned as follows: Or, (Golden Yellow) a radiating light Or, from Centre overall, upon a mound a stylized panther statant reguardant all Azure, detailed of the second, below two arched laurel branches throughout Vert. Attached below the shield, a Blue scroll inscribed PRINCIPUM DIGNITAS in Gold letters.


Symbolism

Blue and gold are the school colors. The panther is the schools mascot, symbolizing pride, leadership and respect. Blue suggests the southern skies, and gold denotes wisdom and the color of the sun. The radiant light and laurel leaves refer to academic excellence and a successful future for its students. Murphy High School prides itself on tradition and claims to be the oldest school in Alabama. The Latin motto, PRINCIPUM DIGNITAS, translates to LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE in English.


Background

The shoulder loop insignia was originally approved on 7 June 1976. It is hereby cancelled due to a new design authorized on 2 February 2017.
